Kairos Outside is a ministry designed for women impacted by incarceration. When a woman has a relative or loved one doing time inside prison, she is also doing time on the outside. The goals of Kairos Outside include: providing a "safe place" for women, offering the gift of God's unconditional love and acceptance, encouraging the sharing of life's journey, fostering spiritual growth, promoting participation in small groups, and creating an opportunity for a relationship with God.

The three day, Kairos Outside Weekend Retreats are based on a series of talks from women volunteers sharing their life's journey. Each Guest has the opportunity to talk in small family groups; all sharing is voluntary. The Weekend is interspersed with music, prayer, fun activities and general pampering. We then support and encourage ongoing participation in small groups and reunions.

Kairos Outside lets these loved ones know they are not alone. By sharing the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ, Kairos hopes to change hearts, transform lives and impact the world. As a ministry, Kairos embraces a diverse group of volunteers working together to fulfill Christ's call to action in Matthew 25:36.

We are an inter-denominational volunteer Ministry based on Christian beliefs.  Although Kairos Outside is Christian in nature, no religious affiliation is necessary to be our Guest on a Weekend.  The Kairos Inside Prison Ministry is the ideal vehicle to provide an opportunity for a religious experience on the inside.  Kairos Outside helps strengthen the supporting family on the outside.

As one Kairos Outside Guest aptly stated, "I always assume people are going to judge me when they find out I had someone in prison; but it was humbling to find out these women not only liked me, but they loved me.”

Get Involved

We need your help.  There are many opportunities for you to serve in this ministry. All we ask is that you have a willing heart and a spirit of obedience and you can play a crucial role in God's ministry of Changing Hearts, Transforming Lives and Impacting the World.  Here's some basic information to help you "get involved."

Kairos Outside Serving the San Diego Area

Kairos Outside offers a comfortable, non-judging retreat for women to support each other as they journey through the incarceration of a friend or relative. The Kairos Outside Weekend is a 3- day program based on a series of talks by volunteers designed to address the pain of enduring separation from the one inside and the judgment of others from their community. Guests hear the talks in small family groups. The program is interspersed with music, prayer, and and fun activities. Kairos Prison Ministry is a Christian program, although no religious affiliation is necessary to be a Guest. Any 20-year-old or older female family member whose life has been impacted by the incarceration of a loved one, or a woman who was unable to attend Kairos Inside while in prison, is eligible to attend Kairos Outside.

Be a Team Member

Kairos volunteers come from all walks and strata of life. They all share a desire to follow Christ's admonition of Matthew 25:36, "I was in prison and you visited me."  If you feel God's call to minister to the incarcerated's female family members, friends or relatives, you may be called as a part of a Kairos Outside team.

Be a Support Volunteer

Not all Kairos Outside members serve just in the Weekend Retreat. Each Kairos retreat weekend has opportunities for outside support, such as baking cookies, writing letters of support, or preparing meals.  Get your church's Sunday school classes to color placemats for mealtimes during the retreat.
